Instagram stores many HD videos in the VP9 format, which iPhone Photos, iMovie and QuickTime can't play. The file downloads fine but shows a black screen or an error. Fix it by downloading again with the Video button (H.264, plays everywhere) or by using HD in our video downloader on an Apple device — it automatically converts HD to H.264.
You downloaded an Instagram video, but on your iPhone it shows a black screen, plays sound without picture, or the Photos app says it "can't be played" and won't let you save it. The same file may play perfectly on an Android phone or in Chrome on a PC. Nothing is broken — the problem is the way the video is encoded.
The cause: VP9 vs. H.264
A video file such as MP4 is just a container. Inside it, the picture is compressed with a codec. Instagram uses two codecs:
| H.264 (AVC) | VP9 | |
|---|---|---|
| Used by Instagram for | Standard quality (usually 720p) | Many HD versions (1080p) |
| iPhone Photos / iMovie | ✓ Plays | ✗ Black screen or error |
| QuickTime on Mac | ✓ Plays | ✗ Won't open |
| Android | ✓ Plays | ✓ Plays |
| Chrome / Firefox / VLC | ✓ Plays | ✓ Plays |
| WhatsApp sharing | ✓ Reliable | Sometimes fails |
VP9 gives better quality at a smaller size, so Instagram uses it for many HD streams. Inside the Instagram app, iPhones can play VP9 streams. But Apple's own apps for saved videos — Photos, iMovie and QuickTime — don't support VP9 in MP4 files. So a downloader that simply saves the HD stream gives you a file the iPhone can't open.
How our downloader avoids the problem
- The Video button always gives you the H.264 MP4, which plays on every device.
- When you tap HD on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, the downloader checks the codec. If the HD file is VP9, it is converted to H.264 on the server before it is sent to you. That's why HD shows "Converting…" for a few seconds on Apple devices.
- On Android and Windows, HD is sent as-is, because those devices play VP9 natively and the download is faster.
So with the Instagram video downloader, every file you save on an iPhone plays in the Photos app.
How to fix a video you already downloaded
- Download it again on your iPhone using the Video button, or HD (it will be converted). This is the easiest fix.
- Play it in VLC. The free VLC app for iOS plays VP9 files. Open the file from the Files app with VLC. This lets you watch it, but it still won't go into Photos.
- Convert it on a computer. Free tools such as HandBrake can convert the file to H.264 ("Fast 1080p30" preset). This takes longer than simply downloading again.
Other reasons a video won't play
- The download didn't finish. A file much smaller than expected (for example 200 KB for a one-minute video) was interrupted. Download it again on a stable connection.
- It's still in the Files app. Videos downloaded with Safari are in Files, not Photos. Open the file and tap Share → Save Video.
- Not enough storage. Photos refuses to save videos when the iPhone is almost full. Free up some space in Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Very old iOS. Devices on iOS 12 or earlier can struggle with large 1080p files. Use the standard Video quality.
- It's actually a photo. Some posts look like videos but are photos with music added in Instagram. These save as JPG images, without sound.
On Windows and Android
Android phones play VP9 natively, so HD files open in any gallery app. On Windows, VP9 plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and VLC. The built-in Films & TV / Media Player app may ask for the free VP9 Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. If you want a file that plays everywhere without extras, choose Video.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my downloaded Instagram video play on iPhone?
It is most likely encoded in VP9, which Instagram uses for many HD videos. iPhone Photos, iMovie and QuickTime cannot play VP9, so the file shows a black screen or an error.
How do I fix an Instagram video that won't play on iPhone?
Download it again with the Video button (H.264) or with HD on an Apple device, which converts the file to H.264 automatically. VLC can also play the existing file.
Does the Video button lose quality?
It is the standard quality Instagram plays in the app, usually 720p. Use HD for up to 1080p — on Apple devices it is converted so it still plays.
Do VP9 videos play on Android?
Yes. Android supports VP9 natively, so HD files play in any gallery or video app.
Why does the video play in Chrome but not in Photos?
Browsers include their own VP9 decoder, while Apple's Photos and QuickTime apps do not support VP9 in MP4 files.
